Gayatri Upasak Sangh

There are in total 16 Sanskaras in Saraswat community one of which is Upanyana Sanskar. Parampujya HH Shrimad Vidyadhiraj Shripad Vader Swami Ji had formed a committee called Gayatri Upasak Sangh under the main committee of Wadala mutt to specifically focus on this. Upanayan Sanskar is done on Boys below 10 years of age. The rituals are organized after Ram Navami in the month of April as Jeshth Maas is in May. The main reason behind not having in Jeshth Mass, is because as per customs & traditions, elder son’s Upanayan Sanskar cannot be performed in Jeshth Mass.

The announcement is made after Pratishsthapana Divas in February. Wadala mutt arranges everything. The families of Batus are not required to pay anything. Mutt gives Pancha, Mudra to Batus also Dakshina to Bhatmaams. They also arrange Breakfast, Lunch, evening Tea for Batus and their families. Upanyan Sanskar Day starts with Devata Prarthana in Ram Mandir and then in Hanuman Mandir. After that Mudra Dharan is done on Battu as well as on Yajman. All Batus are informed in advance to come with their hair cut. The Havan is performed of all Batus who come after hair cut. Graha Anukulta plays an important role in every rituals. Hence NavGraha Havan is performed on behalf of all Batus. Chairman of Gayatri Upasak Sangh do the rituals of NavGraha Havan in the presence of a Batus. At the end of this havan, during PurnaHuti, holy water is sprayed on Batus.

After this Matru Bhojan takes place. Matru Bhojan means it is the last time when mother feed lunch to son last time before Thread Ceremony. After Upnayan Battu is expected to eat his lunch on his own, and not to be fed by mother. Brahmapadesham follows Matru Bhojan. Brahmopadesham is very important ritual in Upanayan Sanskar. Bhatmam keeps cloth on the heads of Battu & his father so that no other can hear. The entire Gayatri Mantra and other Mantras are expected to be recited by father of Battu but in these days Bhatmam also helps in the same, It is expected that Battu should recite the same on daily basis. This is followed by Rugved Mantra recited on Mike by Bhatmam. All the rituals including NavGraha Havan are performed as per Rugved. Bhiksha Daan is also important part of Upanayan Sanskar, in which Battu request his mother, father and relatives for Bhiksha.

Gayatri Upasak Sangh gives Sandhya Vandana book with Swamiji’s photos on it and Mudras to Battu. It is expected Battu should read Sandhya Vandana. Later Bhatmam teaches Sandhya Vandana to Batus in the Hall while his relatives sit outside. This is followed by Bhojan/ Lunch. While arrangements for relatives is made on ground floor, Batus have with Bhatmaams on first floor of Shri Ram Mandir where some rituals are taught by Bhatmaams to Batus while having Bhojan.

Post Lunch Vaidik Ashirvachan is given by Gayatri Upasak Sangh & Bhatmaams in which Batus are requested to follow the rituals taught by Bhatmam during Upanayan Sanskar, recite Gayatri Mantra on daily basis etc. The whole day programme ends with Darshan in Shri Ram Mandir and followed by Tea.
